These DIY strawberry hot chocolate bombs are a refreshing spring treat, made with freeze-dried strawberries and delicious white chocolate.
It might be getting warmer, but this rainy, still cool weather has me craving hot chocolate. And nothing screams warm weather more than strawberries (in my opinion). Pair it with some white chocolate (inspired by these white chocolate-covered strawberries), and you’ll be surprised you lived without this drink for so long!

Ingredients & Tools
For these DIY strawberry white hot chocolate bombs, you’ll need a few items:
- Hot Chocolate Bomb or Half Sphere Mold – I got mine from Amazon. They come in various sizes. I prefer the 2-inch or 2.5-inch ones for hot chocolate bombs. I used silicone molds but also come in plastic and other materials.
- Chocolate Bars – I love using these Lindt White Chocolate Bars for this project. Each 100 grams bar makes about 2 chocolate bombs.
- White Chocolate Chips – These are used on the inside of the hot chocolate bombs, but you can also use a white-hot chocolate mix instead
- Mini Marshmallows – Mini Marshmallows will fit into the molds better than normal-sized marshmallows. If you can find any strawberry-flavored marshmallows, they go really well with this recipe! I found some at my local Dollar Store.
- Sprinkles – these are optional if you want to decorate your hot chocolate bombs. I used these Wilton Gold Sprinkles.
- Freeze Dried Strawberries – Either whole or powdered freeze-dried strawberries will work for this recipe. The freeze-dried strawberries rehydrate in the milk and infuse such a refreshing flavor for this drink.
- Digital Thermometer – optional – but recommended if you’re using real chocolate (not candy melts).
Strawberry white hot chocolate bombs
Making these hot chocolate bombs is a really simple process. But it does require a bit of patience to get that smooth shiny look!
If you’re looking for regular hot chocolate bombs, and a full tutorial, I got you covered!

#1: Melt Chocolate
First, melt the chocolate in a heat proof bowl.
This can be done either in the microwave or over a double boiler on the stovetop.
If you are melting the chocolate in the microwave, here are the steps:
- Add all the chocolate minus 2 tablespoons to a heatproof bowl
- Melt the chocolate on 50% power for 30 seconds
- Stir the chocolate
- Return to the microwave and melt the chocolate again at 50% for 30 seconds (or 15 seconds for white chocolate)
- Stir again.
- If the chocolate has mostly melted, add the reserved chocolate, to the bowl and stir until all the chocolate has fully melted
- If the chocolate has not fully melted, return to the microwave for 15 seconds increments at 50% power until melted.
If you are using real chocolate (not coverture or compound chocolate or candy melts), I recommend using a digital thermometer to ensure that the chocolate stays below under 85ºF for white chocolate when melted.
#2: Mold Chocolate – 1st coat
Once the chocolate has fully melted, add it to the sphere mold.
100 grams of chocolate is enough for about 2 hot chocolate bombs.
Using a spoon or a food-safe brush, spread the chocolate so the mold is fully covered in chocolate.
Next, flip the mold and allow the excess chocolate to drip.
Set the mold in the fridge for 10 minutes.
#3: Mold Chocolate – 2nd coat
Once the mold has set in the fridge for about 10 minutes, remove it from the fridge.
Next, add more chocolate, using the paying close attention to the edges this time, to ensure that there is an even layer of chocolate.
Next, return to the fridge again, this time for at least 30 minutes, until the chocolate has fully firmed.
#4: Remove the Half spheres from the mold
Once the chocolate is fully solidified, carefully remove the chocolate from the mold.
#5: Fill half the Chocolate Spheres
Next, add your other add-ins to half the chocolate spheres. Some ideas for add-ins are:
- white chocolate chips, or white hot chocolate mix
- marshmallows,
- crushed freeze-dried strawberries (about 2-3 pieces)

#6: Assemble Hot Chocolate Bombs
To assemble the hot chocolate bombs you’ll need a warm surface.
The easiest way is to use a plate that has been warmed in the microwave for 30 seconds.
Then, take the empty half of the hot chocolate sphere and melted the edges slightly to smooth. Then use the partially melted edges to “glue” the two halves of hot chocolate together.
Let it rest for about 10 minutes so that chocolate has a chance to cool and harden again.
#7: Decorate Hot Chocolate Bombs
To decorate, I drizzled melted chocolate, along with some sprinkles to make them look special.

Sometimes you can see the seams. This is where decorating with sprinkles or melted chocolate helps hide any imperfections!
These DIY hot chocolate bombs would make really cute edible gifts if you wrapped them in a cookie bag, with some ribbon and a tag. Or as part of a care package with snacks to enjoy with hot chocolate!
#8: Enjoy the Hot Chocolate Bombs
Add the strawberry white hot chocolate bomb to a large cup, then pour one cup (8 oz) of hot/steamed milk. The steamed milk will help the chocolate melt, and the marshmallows will float to the top for a fun indulgent treat!
If you make your own hot chocolate bombs, I’d love to see them!
Tips for Strawberry White Hot Chocolate
- If you’d rather enjoy your strawberry hot chocolate asap, you can just add all the ingredients to a cup along with some steamed milk, or over the stovetop like regular hot chocolate.
- I prefer a mix of crushed freeze-dried strawberries and strawberry powder, as it adds to the texture of the hot chocolate.
